Memory 5 (Game 157)
Delicious thematically appropriate memories. :9
Positive-Neutral: Wicked Scary is, uh, wicked scary. "I'm afraid not."
What It Was: 2x05, Fear Itself
The memory starts with the Titans swooping into a video rental store defeat a villain named Control Freak, who has a magical remote that can make objects come to life. Yes. Once they finish with him (via Robin's brainwave about sprinklers, which makes this the second memory Raven's had where sprinklers are the solution), Beast Boy decides to rent Wicked Scary. The clerk lets him have it for free so they'll get out of the store. :Db
Back at the tower, a thunderstorm is in full swing and the Titans watch the movie. After the movie ends the other Titans discuss and laugh about how scared they were, a reaction that surprises Raven. She herself hides in her hood and absolutely denies being afraid ("I don't do fear."). Later, after they've all gone to bed, the Titans hear a scream and investigate...just as the lights fail and the monster from Wicked Scary appears. There are fisticuffs and Raven discovers that her powers aren't working. The monster lashes out at Raven and then ~mysteriously~ vanishes.
Thinking Control Freak's broken out of custody and into the tower to get back his magical remote, the Titans start searching (genre-savvy as he is, Beast Boy refuses to let them split up.). As they investigate, the monster reappears and drags Beast Boy away (the good-looking comic relief guy always goes first) into the shadows. The rest of them end up in the evidence room and find Control Freak's remote right where they left it. Just as Robin is about to solve the mystery!1, he too gets dragged away. Cyborg, Starfire, and Raven end up searching the basement for Beast Boy and Robin. Starfire is taken by a swarm of four-eyed rats.
Cyborg and Raven decide to try and get out of the tower and find help, but Cyborg simply vanishes when Raven walks on ahead. The monsters appear and chase her into the living room, bearing down on her from all sides. Finally, Raven admits that she was afraid, and realizes that she can still fight through it, taking back control of her powers. The Titans reappear, completely unharmed (I assume they were chilling in the magical dimension inside her soul), and they watch the sun rise together.
What She Learned:
- Being restrained/gagged makes it difficult for her to use her powers. I assume this is because she's used to relying on gestures and her incantation to focus and direct them rather than because she actually needs either of those things. Anyway, Dawn will now be extra afraid of being restrained because she doesn't want to be helpless, but on the other hand she also remembers how to use her powers to break out of restraints, so it kind of evens out in the end.
- She can lose control of her power in a BIG way. Not that she didn't know she could lose control sometimes, but this memory is definitely at the upper end of the scale. Dawn is going to try even harder not to lose it in high-stakes situations (especially since she could've hurt Folken by flinging him around during Haunted's game /o\).
- It was really, really important to not admit or give in to her fear; in fact, she starts out thinking of these things are basically synonymous. More than just her pride drove her to keep denying that she was afraid or could even become afraid. Dawn is...not quite sure why this is. :|b It seems kind of silly but she gets the sense that it was something very important to her.
- ...But even so, by the end of her memory she realizes that admitting fear is not the same as giving into it. It's okay to be afraid! Fear doesn't have to be debilitating or a liability because you can still fight through it. In canon this is a much more important realization than it is in Sabra, but it's still a good, solid, comforting one to have.
- Power update: "Raven was afraid. But when she wouldn't talk about it, the fear found another way out." Repressing emotions is bad!1 and could result in power freak-outs even worse than the spontaneous ones. So she will be careful not to let that happen because she doesn't have to and doesn't see any reason to.
- Stuff about the tower: the evidence room, her bedroom, the basement.
---
Note for Beardog: This is a power freak-out memory! This time it will be more along the lines of ~deep shadows~ with tentacley monsters and four-eyed rats creeping around in them and generally it will be super creepy. Everything will go back to normal by the time the memory ends.
